BUY - A - BRICK

THE ST. MARY'S COUNTY AFRICAN AMERICAN MONUMENT WALKWAY

FREEDOM PARK
Tulagi Place
Lexington Park, Maryland

We are encouraging individuals and organizations wishing to provide financial support for UCAC to purchase bricks inscribed with their name(s) or the name of someone they wish to honor. These bricks will be placed on the walkway surrounding and leading to the monument and will serve as a permanent acknowledgment of their support and commitment to the importance of African-American contributions to St. Mary's County. The cost is a tax-deductible donation of $50.00 per brick. You are entitled to 18 characters for each brick and an additional fifty cents for each extra character. If you would like to purchase additional bricks, please place inscriptions on a separate sheet and attach it to this form. Complete the order form on the back and mail to address above.

The Dream came to life when one person shared a vision with another, and, together, they thought it was important enough to pursue making the dream a reality. Mr. Elmer Brown started forming the Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions (UCAC), an organization founded to record the significant contributions of African Americans in the development of St. Mary's County Maryland.

The Focus was the creation of a monument to commemorate Americans, past and present, of African descent who have made historic contributions to the development of St. Mary's County in areas such as the following: community service, education, entertainment, government, religion, sports, and technology.

The Reality is a monument completed in July of 2000 that provides the community with a rich cultural experience of our historical heritage. It will serve as a long-standing reminder to members of this community of the positive contributions and significant impact that people of color have had and continue to have upon St. Mary's County. It will assist in fostering high self-esteem and motivation in youth. Children can improve their lives by understanding the past and, therefore, shaping the future.

Though the monument has been built, there are still important ways in which you can contribute to UCAC. You can purchase a brick to honor a mentor, friend, or family member, or just to show your support for the project. Proceeds from the purchase of bricks will be used to maintain the monument and to support the work of the Oral History Committee. Membership in UCAC committees is open to individuals and organizations willing to share information and learn about African-American Heritage.

UCAC is a nonprofit organization that receives contributions from individuals and organizations as well as from fund raising activities. The Dream of the UCAC is to pass on a rich multicultural history, display positive images, share the significant impact of people of color, foster high self-esteem for our children, and insure that youth in St. Mary's County understand that the past helps shape the future. We will continue to unite individuals and organizations to share information and learn about each other's heritage.
